It's a new year and that's a chance for a fresh start for all of us! Even if you're going back to the same classes and groups of students, it's still a great chance for a reset. Of course, we also have content to get back to, so how can we make use of the opportunity in just the first few days?
1. Cultivate a Positive Classroom Culture: Our classroom is more than just a space for learning; it's a community. Let's focus on building a positive and inclusive culture where every student feels valued and supported. Small gestures like personalized welcome notes or a collaborative class project can set a tone of unity and collaboration. It can also be as simple as making sure you have a community circle the first day back.
An easy circle is to make this bulletin board and have each student grab a word to bring to circle and explain why. I downloaded the templates from this great blog. Yes, this is last year's. I didn't get the new one up before I left for break.
2. Engaging Welcome Back Activities: Kick off the new year with activities that spark
curiosity and excitement. Whether it's a thought-provoking icebreaker, a collaborative project, or a lively class discussion about their holiday adventures, let's make those first days back memorable and engaging. I like to ease students back in and letting them draw, then share, creates space to talk about their vacations while remembering we are back in the classroom.
3. Open Communication: Let's reaffirm our commitment to open communication. Encourage students to share their expectations, concerns, and aspirations for the upcoming semester. A simple class discussion or setting up a suggestion box can create a space for their voices to be heard.
It's important to make space to share what students shared, even if it was anonymous, and discuss how that feedback can be used to have a stronger community of learning.
4. Make Space for New Resolutions that aren't only academic: Encourage students to set personal and academic goals for the semester. This not only empowers them to take ownership of their learning but also fosters a sense of direction and purpose. Consider sharing your own goals to create a culture of shared aspirations.
