Classroom Tech Tools Working for me this Spring

Empowering Your Classroom with Technology Tools

Elevating Classroom Dynamics with Tech Integration

Spring has sprung! And with it all sorts of schedule changes, deadlines, etc. Every school year, and every spring, feels a bit different these last couple of years, but one of the things that keeps changing seems to be what technology is available, available for free, available from my district, etc.

I'm totally open to new things that will save me time and make my teaching more engaging, and I've found that integrating some technology tools into my teaching practices can truly shift the classroom experience for me and my students. With a passion for fostering inclusive, engaging, and equitable learning environments, I'm excited to share some of the tech tools that have become indispensable for me over time for my classroom and all the other parts of teacher life.

My Favorite Tech Tools for Family Communication: Google Voice

When it comes to maintaining open lines of communication with families, Google Voice has been a game-changer for me. It's not just about sending messages or making calls; it's about building trust and strengthening the partnership between home and school. Whether it's celebrating a student's progress or addressing concerns about behavior, Google Voice allows me to communicate in a way that's professional, respectful, and conducive to fostering a sense of community while I still keep my boundaries. I don't have to be available after hours when I don't want to be, but I literally have a motivation tool in my pocket all day long.

I prefer Google Voice to apps that families have to download and I have to log into.

Classroom Tech Tools for Differentiation: Diffit and Murf

In our diverse classrooms, differentiation is key to meeting the unique needs of every learner. Diffit has been instrumental in this regard, providing tools for text leveling and creating accessible materials that support each student.

When a group was reading Sylvia & Aki for a book club, Diffit really helped me provide them background information at their reading level. Caveat: Sometimes, simplifying text seems to mean oversimplifying history. I have had to watch to make sure the new versions don't perpetuate harmful stereotypes or oversimplify oppression.

Additionally, Murf, my newest toy, has been a revelation in supporting struggling readers by providing audio recordings of texts. I love that I can paste in the text students will be reading in class and literally walk away from my computer while it spits out a human-sounding audio file for students who need it.

Witnessing the boost in confidence and engagement as students access texts in a format that meets their needs has been truly rewarding.

Assessment: Quizziz

Assessment shouldn't be a source of stress; it should be a tool for growth and understanding. Quizziz has really helped change the way I approach assessment in my classroom. With its vast library of quizzes created by fellow educators, I can often find resources that align with my curriculum and meet the diverse needs of my students without much more than a few clicks on my side. Offering multiple attempts on quizzes encourages a growth mindset and empowers students to take ownership of their learning journey. It has also meant that "early finishers" also have something to do- try again.

Teacher Life: ChatGPT

Yes, me too. For crafting parent messages, ChatGPT can be super helpful. But really, I love that it's like having my teacher bestie right here when I want to ask "how can I make this learning target student friendly." I really love pasting in a bunch of student work and having it help me identify trends for small group instruction that's data-driven. Chat GPT's ability to generate student-friendly explanations and identify trends in student work has helped me foster a more culturally responsive, equitable, and inclusive classroom environment.

Harnessing the Power of Tech for Educational Equity

Incorporating technology into our teaching practices isn't just about embracing the latest gadgets; it's about leveraging tools that empower us to create classrooms where every student feels valued, supported, and capable of achieving success. By integrating tools like Google Voice, Difit, Murf, Quizziz, and ChatGPT into my instructional repertoire, I am closer to cultivating the vibrant learning community I want- grounded in authenticity, collaboration, and critical thinking. Let's continue to explore the possibilities, challenge the status quo, and champion educational equity for all.
